A day of fasting from grains and beans with extra chanting and hearing — Ekadasi cleanses the heart.

Significance of this day

Ekadasi falls on the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight and is described in the Puranas as the most dear day to Lord Vishnu.

The purpose of the fast is not merely abstinence but to free time and consciousness for chanting, hearing and remembering Krishna.

Each Ekadasi has its own name and glory, narrated by Lord Krishna to Maharaja Yudhishthira in the Padma Purana.

How it is observed at ISKCON Asansol

• Abstain from grains and beans; many devotees observe a full or water-only fast.
• Extra rounds of japa, reading of the Ekadasi mahatmya, and breaking the fast within the prescribed window the next morning.
